Images And Words est l'album qui a changé radicalement la trajectoire du groupe et la vie de ses membres, et le premier avec James Labrie au chant. Alternant gros morceaux de bravoure (Take The Time, Metropolis part 1, Learning To Live) et compositions plus légères (Another Day, en laquelle Mike voyait à tort un bon single potentiel, ou le sublime Wait For Sleep), c'est l'album qui contient la plupart des "grands classiques" du groupe, tels que Pull Me Under et Metropolis part 1. Que de beau monde !

C'est le deuxième album de Dream Theater, le premier chez ATCO Records. ATCO Records a ensuite été racheté par Eastwest, qui s'est fait racheté par Elektra, qui s'est finalement fait racheté par Atlantic. Les chansons Don't Look Past Me, To Live Forever et A Change of Seasons n'ont pas été retenues pour figurer sur l'album. Pull Me Under est le premier single et clip sortis par le groupe. C'est le premier album à être certifié Gold. Le 'Part 1' a été ajouté par le groupe à Metropolis comme une blague, Il n'était pas prévu de faire une 'Part 2'. Finalement, la 'Part 2' verra le jour plus tard sous la forme d'un concept album : Metropolis pt 2: Scenes From A Memory. Learning To Live est la première du groupe à dépasser 10 minutes. Wait For Sleep est la première chanson à avoir été composée entièrement (musique et paroles) par un seul membre : Kevin Moore. Dans le livret, on voit un remerciement à Fatez Warning (just kidding!) qui est un clin d'oeil à la faute qu'avait faite Fates Warning dans ses remerciements à 'Dream Theatre' sur leur premier album. Il existe une version swing de Under A Glass Moon appelée Fly Me to the Glass Moon. Le titre de cet album vient des paroles de Wait For Sleep. La pochette de l'album reprend de nombreux éléments tirés des paroles de l'album. Ce concept a été repris pour le prochain album : Awake. C'est le premier album à utiliser la police Dream Theater pour leur signature. Le logo Majesty apparait sur les montants du lit. Pull Me Under s'appelait initialement Oliver's Twist, Take The Time s'appelait initialement Grab That Feel, Metropolis part 1 s'appelait initialement Crumbling Metropolis, Under A Glass Moon s'appelait initialement The Battle of Jimmy Cocoa and Fishface et Learning To Live s'appelait initialement Creep With Tonality.

Difficile de deviner derrière une telle réussite artistique que l’ambiance a été délétère entre le groupe et le producteur David Prater, qui a triggué malgré son avis la batterie de Mike et n’a gardé que les prises de chant clair de James, mettant de coté les autres prises chantées plus agressivement.

Grâce au succès surprise de Pull Me Under, diffusé sur MTV, cet album a permis au groupe d’exploser commercialement et de faire de nombreux fans. L’injustice faite à When Dream And Day Unite a été largement rattrapée ! Aujourd'hui encore, Images And Words reste un album mythique pour beaucoup d’amateurs du groupe, pas tant à cause de son succès que du cocktail réussi entre technique et feeling qu’il propose. Mauvais coté de cette réussite commerciale, la maison de disque va prendre le pari de tenter de rééditer cet exploit à la sortie de chaque nouvel album, jusqu’à Falling Into Infinity.

Images And Words is the album that radically changed the trajectory of the band and the lives of its members. It is the first featuring James Labrie on vocals. With alternating 'epics' (Take The Time, Metropolis part 1 and Learning To Live) and lighter ballads (Another Day, which was wrongly perceived as a potential hit by Mike Portnoy, or the sublime Wait For Sleep), The album features many of the group's "classics", such as Pull Me Under and Metropolis part 1.

It is Dream Theater's second album and their first with ATCO Records. ATCO was bought by EastWest, which was then bought by Elektra, which was finally bought out by Atlantic. The songs Don't Look Past Me, To Live Forever and A Change of Seasons were written at that time, but weren't placed on the album. Pull Me Under was the first single and music video released by the band. It was their first album to be certified Gold by the RIAA.

The 'Part 1' was added to Metropolis as a joke by the band, as they never intended to write a 'Part 2'. Finally, the 'Part 2' came later in the form of the concept album : Metropolis pt 2: Scenes From A Memory. Learning To Live is the band's first song to exceed 10 minutes. Wait For Sleep is the first song to be entirely composed (music and lyrics) by one member : Kevin Moore. In the booklet, we see a 'Thank You' to Fatez Warning (just kidding!) which is a nod to the mistake Fates Warning made in thanking 'Dream Theatre' on their first album. There exists a swing version of Under A Glass Moon called Fly Me to the Glass Moon. The album's title comes from the lyrics of Wait For Sleep. The cover contains numerous elements referring to various titles and lyrics from the album. The same concept was also applied for the next album : Awake. It is the first album to feature the Dream Theater font, and the Majesty logo appears on the bed's canopy. Pull Me Under was originally titled Oliver's Twist, Take The Time was Grab That Feel, Metropolis part 1 was Crumbling Metropolis, Under A Glass Moon was The Battle of Jimmy Cocoa and Fishface and Learning To Live was Creep With Tonality.

It is difficult to imagine that behind such an artistic success, the mood behind the scenes was strained between the band and the producer, David Prater. He triggered Mike's snare drum despite being told not to and only kept James' clean vocal takes, tossing aside the more aggressive vocal takes.

Thanks to the surprising success of Pull Me Under, shown on MTV, this album propelled the group to gain massive exposure and introduced them to many fans. The injustice done to When Dream And Day Unite was greatly overcome ! Even today, Images And Words remains a mythical album for many fans, not much for its commercial success but more for the stellar mix between technical prowess and feeling. A downside to such commercial success is that the record company tried to recreate it with the release of each new album, up until Falling Into Infinity, by pushing the band to write similar hits.
