Cet album devait initialement s'appeler Stream of Consciousness (extrait des paroles de Lines In The Sand). Les chansons non retenues sur cet album sont : Metropolis, pt. 2, Raise The Knife, Cover My Eyes, Where Are You Now ?, The Way It Used To Be et Speak to Me.

Falling Into Infinity is the band's fourth album. All the songs were recorded with the band playing together, rather than having each part tracked separately. Initially, Burning My Soul and the instrumental Hell's Kitchen formed a single song found on some bootlegs under the title "Burning My Soul '96". The original title for this album was supposed to be Stream of Consciousness (from the Lines In The Sand lyrics). The band recently released the full demos of this album as an Official Bootleg. Songs not retained on this album are : Metropolis pt. 2, Raise The Knife, Cover My Eyes, Where Are You Now ?, The Way It Used To Be and Speak to Me. The person who made the swing version of Under A Glass Moon also released a version of Lines In The Sand, called Strangers in the Sand. The song New Millennium comes from an alternate version of Caught In A Web, played live and entitled Caught in Alice's Nine Inch Tool Garden. The song refers to popular bands of the '90s : Alice In Chains, Nine Inch Nails, Tool and Soundgarden.

Falling Into Infinity was eagerly awaited by fans, following many difficulties in finding a producer. Finally, Kevin Shirley was chosen to produce the album, marking the start of a longstanding collaboration. With the release of this album, the band tried to expand their fan-base, by writing more 'accessible' songs. This displeased many fans, making Falling Into Infinity the most 'controversial' Dream Theater album.

While a few songs might seem out of place with their 'grunge' sound or their apparent simplicity (the band itself wasn't happy with all the tracks), Dream Theater also provide some truly excellent moments like the instrumental Hell's Kitchen, the very moving Trial Of Tears, or New Millennium, where John Myung plays a Chapman Stick. Falling Into Infinity is the most commercial DT album, but still doesn't lack in quality material, and can pique many fans' interest. It's also the only L.P. featuring Derek Sherinian on keyboards, whose influence is undeniable on pieces like Anna Lee.

The group composed enough songs to release a double-album, but the record company refused to do so, as it was too commercially risky. Many of the remaining tracks (such as the elusive Metropolis pt. 2, released on the Demo Series bootleg) were finally released as B-sides on the CD offered to fanclubs members for Christmas 1997 – with the exception of Metropolis pt. 2. An other very important detail is that Mike almost left the band near the end of the tour, feeling that he no longer had artistic control over the music. We can hear him say "Au revoir mon ami !" on the tour's live album, Once In A LIVEtime. Luckily, the rest of the group convinced him to stay on...
