This story ends where it began").

Octavarium is the band's eighth album, featuring eight songs. It is also the last album released under Atlantic Records.

The Root Of All Evil is the third song in the AA saga, which started with The Glass Prison and went on with This Dying Soul. Never Enough was written for the "1% of the fans that are never satisfied with what the band does". The title track, Octavarium, initially ended with a flute solo, but the finale was changed to the first piano notes of The Root Of All Evil in order to close the circle (which is the song's theme, represented by the lyrics "This story ends where it began"). The album features an orchestra playing on tracks 7 and 8, and a string quartet on track 2.

In addition to performing with traditional keyboards, Jordan plays on a Lap-Steel guitar and on a Continuum Fingerboard.

The entire album revolves around the numbers 8 (8th album, 8 songs, pendulums in the Newton's Cradle, sum on the domino, number of white piano keys, the 8-ball, spider's legs, the octagon, the octopus...) and 5 (birds, sum on the other domino, levels in the labyrinth, fish, Panic Attack - 5th song - is in 5/8...). The resulting concept is quite abstract but proves itself to be very rich, as music players can see during certain sections of the title song (notably the instrumental in "Full Circle"), that were composed entirely using this 5/8 idea. A more detailed explanation can be found in fanzine n°47.
