Mike Portnoy Mike Portnoy est né le 20 Avril 1967 et a grandi à Long Island où son intérêt pour la musique a commencé très tôt. "Mon père était DJ et j'ai donc été bercé par la musique dès mon plus jeune âge. J'avais une énorme collection de disques quand j'étais jeune et j'adorais les Beatles, puis plus tard Kiss. Il était inévitable que je devienne batteur."
Bien que Mike soit autodidacte à la batterie, il a pris des cours de théorie musicale au lycée.
A cette époque il commença à jouer dans des groupes locaux comme Intruder, Rising Power et Inner Sanctum, ces derniers ayant réalisé un album. Mike quitta le groupe après avoir décroché une bourse pour l'université de Berklee à Boston.
Collectionneur avide de pas mal de choses, Mike a une énorme collection de souvenirs de Dream Theater comprenant des bootlegs, des posters, des badges et tout ce qui peut avoir le nom de son groupe inscrit dessus.
Il s'occupe également de tous les enregistrements du groupe que ce soit sur vidéo ou DAT. Sa collection de films comprend notamment 2001: L'Odyssée de l'Espace, Orange Mécanique, Le Mensonge de Jacob et The Wall ainsi que des épisodes des Simpsons et des combats de boxe.
Mike dit que ses influences principales sont le batteur de Rush Neil Peart et le regretté Frank Zappa. Ses autres influences comprennent également des batteurs comme Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Phillips, John Bonham et Keith Moon ainsi que des groupes comme les Beatles, Queen, Yes, Metallica, Jellyfish, Iron Maiden, U2 et Jane's Addiction. Il est également fan de certains groupes de rap.
Mike vit avec sa femme Marlène à Rockland, près de New York, avec leur fille Melody, leur fils Max, leur chien Bongo et leur chat Cypress.
