Awake est le troisième album de Dream Theater et le dernier avec Kevin Moore aux claviers. Erotomania, Voices et The Silent Man ne forment en fait qu'une seule chanson appelée A Mind Beside Itself, ce qui en fait la première chanson à dépasser les 20 minutes. The Mirror et Lie se mélangent comme si elles ne formaient qu'une seule chanson. Les musiciens du groupe ont maintes fois demandé à Kevin de les rejoindre pour jouer Space-Dye Vest live, mais il a toujours refusé. Comme pour le précédent album, la pochette reprend les éléments des paroles de chaque chanson. Le titre Awake vient des chansons Innocence Faded et Voices. 6:00 s'appelait initialement Beachhouse Reality, The Mirror s'appelait initialement Puppies on Acid, Lie s'appelait initialement Kittens on Crack, Lifting Shadows Off A Dream s'appelait initialement Blowfish, Caught In A Web s'appelait initialement Squid, Scarred s'appelait initialement Keymaster et Innocence Faded s'appelait initialement Fresca. L'intro de The Mirror, intitulée Puppies on Acid est toujours jouée live sous ce nom, habituellement mélangée à une autre chanson. Eve et To Live Forever n'ont pas été retenues pour cet album. Noms d'album évoqués avant de choisir Awake : Swim, So Many Ways To Drown A Man, Awareness, Keymaster, Wounds, The Cage, Out In The Rain, Breathe, Promise, The Plague, Coming Into View, Reflections Of Reality, Hell!, Bugs!, A Mind Confined Beside Itself Rising Unbound, Thought Disorder, Fantasy Refuge, Isolation, 6:00, Wood To Chop, Drown, Immune To Openness, Fatalistic Remedies, Scars, Desire And Fear et Space-Dye Vest.


Awake est la preuve que Dream Theater refuse de se répéter d’un album à l’autre. Malgré l’immense succès critique et commercial d’Images And Words, Awake se démarque totalement de son prédécesseur, avec une production plus sèche, un chant parfois âpre et agressif, des compositions à l’ambiance plus sombre, mais aussi une meilleure cohérence globale. Cette fois ci, aucun morceau ne sort véritablement du lot lors des premières écoutes. Nombreux sont ceux qui ont été rebutés à l’époque par cet album surprenant. Les autres ont découvert un des tout meilleurs albums du groupe, à la production plus sobre mais efficace, et aux chansons très riches.


Cet album est donc le dernier avec Kevin Moore aux claviers. Déjà un peu distant au cours des phases de composition et d’enregistrement, Kevin quitte le groupe dès que l’album est terminé, laissant derrière lui comme un testament Space-Dye Vest, composition très personnelle...

Finalement, Awake est un album dense mais passionnant, contenant beaucoup des joyaux du groupe, tels Erotomania, Voices, le duo Lie/The Mirror et Lifting Shadows Off A Dream.

Awake is the third album by Dream Theater and the last featuring Kevin Moore on keyboards. Erotomania, Voices et The Silent Man form a single song called A Mind Beside Itself, their first to surpass 20 minutes. The Mirror and Lie are segued to sound like a single song. The band members have repeatedly asked Kevin to rejoin them onstage during special performances to play Space-Dye Vest live, but he has always refused. Like Images And Words, the album cover contains an element of each song's lyrics. The title Awake comes from the songs Innocence Faded and Voices. 6:00 was originally called Beachhouse Reality, The Mirror was Puppies on Acid, Lie being Kittens on Crack, Lifting Shadows Off A Dream was Blowfish, Caught In A Web was simply Squid, Keymaster became Scarred and Fresca turned into Innocence Faded. The intro of The Mirror, called Puppies on Acid is still played live under that name, usually mixed in with another song. Eve and To Live Forever were not released as part of the album.


Before choosing Awake, possible titles for the album included : Swim, So Many Ways To Drown A Man, Awareness, Keymaster, Wounds, The Cage, Out In The Rain, Breathe, Promise, The Plague, Coming Into View, Reflections Of Reality, Hell!, Bugs!, A Mind Confined Beside Itself Rising Unbound, Thought Disorder, Fantasy Refuge, Isolation, 6:00, Wood To Chop, Drown, Immune To Openness, Fatalistic Remedies, Scars, Desire And Fear et Space-Dye Vest.


Awake is proof that Dream Theater refuses to repeat themselves from album to album. Despite the massive critical and commercial success of Images And Words, Awake is a complete change from its predecessor with a drier production, the vocals being more raw and agressive, darker compositions but with a better overall coherence. From the first listen, nothing sounds out of place. Some fans were surprised and initially turned off upon the release of Awake. Others discovered one of the band's greatest albums, with effective production and rich songwriting.


This album was the last with Kevin Moore on keyboards. Already somewhat distant during the writing and recording of the album, Kevin decided to quit the band once the album was finished, leaving behind his final compostition, Space-Dye Vest.

Awake is a dense yet extremely emotional and passionate album, containing many of the band's 'jewels' such as Erotomania, Voices, the duo Lie/The Mirror and Lifting Shadows Off A Dream.
